DAY 37

I’ll be the first person to admit that I love writing for orchestra. It’s the main medium that I’m requested to use when I score film today, and, in some ways, it’s a bit of a comfort zone for me. It’s less common that I’ll be the guy who’s called for an all-synth score, but when I do, it’s a treat for me! This Spring, I had the privilege of collaborating with Matt Green for a new film called DAY 37 that takes a hard look at the flawed VA system.

Matt always brings me a fun challenge when we work together, no project being like the last. Two years ago, we produced THE LUNCH RUSH: a short musical that we wrote, film, recorded, and shot in what I believe was 8 weeks. Last year, we worked on A HARD GAMBLE and Matt asked me for a score that felt like it was born in the ’40’s. This year, in case the all-synth score wasn’t challenge enough, it had to be continuous... for all 11 minutes of the film. #ChallengeAccepted

Enjoy, and be sure to check out the short from Filmbandit Productions!

DOWN THE FENCE Original Score Teaser!

About two years ago, I got a call from a director in Washington state named "MJ Isakson". Not recognizing the number, I (naturally) ignored the call. Message was something like this:

"Hi, Grant, my name's MJ Isakson, and I'm calling about a new documentary that I'm working on. I found your website and enjoy your music. Could you give me a call back at your earliest convenience?"

Little did I know how much that one phone call would be a game changer for me. Over the last two years, I've been privileged to make friends with the crew, visit sets and screenings, be a part of the editing process, and create some of the most fun music I've ever been able to write for a film. AND the entire score is driven by MELODY.

The full album releases on July 6, but in the meantime, I'm thrilled to be able to finally share a bit from the score. Here's A NOBLE CALLING, featuring the ambient guitar handiwork of Wil Pearce, and sprinkled with the sonic angel dust of Scott Frankfurt of Scott Frankfurt Studio. Enjoy!

THE FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF

Last summer, Michael Carp approached me about composing a new work for solo vibraphone that was out of the "normal" idiom for the medium. He wanted something that was largely lyrical, emotional, infused with cinematic tendencies, something that would appeal to a wide range of audiences rather than just the "studied" crowd. After a series of calls, Skype calls across states and countries, Christmas Eve revisions, and brainstorms, I came up with a through-composed multi-movement work called THE FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF. Mike did a lovely job bringing his own artistry and heart to this work and made for a wonderful collaboration.

As a composer, I'm particularly partial to the fourth and fifth movements, but I'd love to hear what resonates with you as performers, listeners . Let me know if you're interested in the score!

Projects like this with people like Mike make it fun to live in the concert world. Stay tuned for a new work for piano + percussion coming soon....

DOWN THE FENCE Comes to SANTA BARBARA

If you've been following the new for DOWN THE FENCE, you've probably heard that it's having a successful run in the Indie Film circuit (read: Laurels!). If you haven't heard, it's coming to SANTA BARBARA for a special screening! If you weren't able to attend the premiere at the SLO Film Festival, this is a chance to come watch this film with a whole lot of heart. Serving as composer for this project was one of the great joys of my 2016. Stay tuned for more info about the forthcoming soundtrack album!

The House that Rob Built - Teaser!

About two years ago, I had the pleasure of collaborating with director Jon Cipiti and producers Megan Harrington and Catherine Fowler for their feature indie documentary THE DATING PROJECT, which is now in its festival circuit and still has some big news brewing (stay tuned...)!

Last month, I got a call from Jon & Megan wondering if I'd be interested in joining the pre-production team as the composer for their new feature documentary, THE HOUSE THAT ROB BUILT. The film's currently in production, and is the incredible story of Rob Selvig and the Lady Grizz. Never heard of Rob or the Lady Grizz? Check out the trailer below and GET EXCITED.

This trailer has as much heart and passion in it as Jon & Megan do for this project. It's a joy to score for them!

Head over to https://www.thehousethatrobbuiltmovie.com/ for more updates and information about how you can help this come to life!
